Somewhat of a trendsetter, Saatva Mattress was one of the first companies to offer a mattress online back in 2010. The company has come a long way since then, cementing themselves as one of the more popular online mattress companies and spawning two further mattress companies (Loom and Leaf & Zenhaven) a couple of years ago. While companies grow and trends change, the original Saatva mattress from 8 years ago still remains a top seller.

Saatva Mattress Construction

While most online mattress companies make use of “bed in a box” materials, the Saatva Mattress contains an innerspring + coil base, which remains unique to this day. To find out about how it all works, lets take a look at the mattress construction:

Saatva Mattress Layers Review

1 – Individually Wrapped Comfort Coils
For personalized support, Saatva has opted to include individually wrapped comfort coils inside the mattress. The coils respond to each body movement and contour to every body shape. This allows body weight to be evenly spread which can help to reduce common aches and pains.

2 – Dual Perimeter Edge Support System
A foam-edge perimeter on 2 levels of the mattress for added durability and support. It also looks to act as though it holds all the coil systems together to insure tight tolerances.

3 – Lumbar Support Enhancement
Directly underneath the pillow top foam cover is a thin layer of memory foam. The foam is tighter halfway down the mattress to provide additional lumbar support. This helps reduce stress and tension from the lower back and is an excellent point of difference.

4 – Steel Innerspring Support System
Saatva uses premium grade steel that has been tempered three times for the base of the mattress. Unlike foam mattresses, innerspring systems promote bounce and eliminate that “sinking” feeling often associated with all-foam mattresses. Innerspring bases also tend to be more durable than their foam counterparts.

5 – Organic Cotton Cover with Pillow Top Foam
Mostly found in higher end mattresses, the pillow top foam cushioning system keeps the top layer of the mattress soft and comforting. The organic cotton cover is breathable, allowing you to remain cool and comfortable through all 4 seasons.

Saatva Mattress Comfort

The Saatva offers excellent comfort due to the enhanced airflow through the mattress. Because the mattress is made of an innerspring base and individually pocketed coils, there are rows of air-channels from top to bottom, allowing your body heat to flow through and out of the mattress efficiently. The organic cotton cover is also breathable.

One noticeable difference with the Saatva mattress is its responsiveness and bounce. Compared to a foam mattress, the Saatva responds instantly when pressure is applied (individual coils), and retains the classic bouncy feel (innerspring) that’s a favorite with a good percentage of consumers nationwide. Multiple firmness options mean the mattress should be suited to most people. NOTE- those who prefer the “sinking” feeling of memory foam may want to look at Loom and Leaf, the popular memory foam mattress also manufactured by Saatva.

Saatva Mattress Support

With individually wrapped comfort coils, the Saatva mattress offers excellent support. The coils support the spine from the tailbone up to the neck and offer pressure point relief, keeping the nerve channels within the spine equalized. In terms of a base, the innerspring system complements the comfort coils well.

Another unique feature of the Saatva is the tightly packed layer of memory foam directly underneath the pillow top. This memory foam is designed to feel “tight” on the lower back, allowing the spine to maintain its correct resting position over a longer period of time. A nice touch.

We consider the 3 firmnesses of the Saatva Hybrid mattress to land about a half-notch firmer for each level.

Conclusion:

The mattress is well designed, with the “lumbar strip” across the middle of the mattress a particular standout. The mattress breathes well and offers excellent support, all but eliminating pressure-point discomfort. The innerspring base gives the mattress bounce, while the pillow top foam with organic cotton cover adds a touch of luxury.
